René Sommerfeldt was the first German cross-country skier to win the Overall World Cup, claiming it in the 2003-04 season. He also was runner-up at the 2008 Tour de Ski. At the Olympic Winter Games Sommerfeldt won one silver with the relay in 2006 at Torino and a bronze in 2002 at Salt Lake City as well as a silver at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships.
His best individual performance was runner-up in the 50 km at the 2001 World Championships in Lahti which was the first German cross-country medal at a World Championship since 1974. After the 50 km run at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where his best finish was sixth in the relay, he declared his retirement after four consecutive Winter Olympics appearances. He later turned to coaching and entered different positions within the German Skiing Association.
