Astrid de Ridder was one of nine children born to the Argentine businessman Luis de Ridder and his wife Yvonne Perrier. Luis was born in Belgium, arriving in Argentina in 1907 to found a cereal company, with the family living in a mansion in Buenos Aires. Astrid was a keen skier and was selected to compete in the slalom at the 1952 Oslo Olympics, but did not start in the event. Four members of her immediate family, however, did compete at the Winter Olympics, including brothers Luis, Marcelo, and Francisco, and her nephew Enrique. In 1957 Astrid got engaged to Carlos Sanguinetti, with the couple getting married in Germany in 1971. The De Ridder family had multiple properties in Argentina, with a cabin in Bariloche, the Villa Astrid, named after her.
