Silvio Canevari

Silvio and Angelo Canevari were brothers. Silvio died in 1932, but his works were submitted posthumously in 1936, as “hors concours”. He was a neoclassical painter, sculptor and medalist who had studied at the art academy in Roma. He was one of the sculptors of the Foro Italico with monumental sculptures of fascist representation. His son Veniero also became a well-known painter.

The submitted statues were made in different sizes and materials. The Archer (L’Arciere, created in 1930/31, donated by the city of Rovigo) and The Slinger (Il Fromboliere, 1930/31, donated by the city of Pisa), the latter also known as David, are two of the marble statues of the Stadio dei Marmi. One version of The Slinger is in the former Central School for Military Physical Education on the Foro Italico. The Boxer (Pugile, 1931, donated by the city of Viterbo) stands in a niche on the outside wall of this school. Only the Rower (Rematore, 1929, donated by the city of Genoa) was apparently not realized as a large statue. There are about 70-80 cm plaster studies of all the works, some of which were later cast in bronze.
