Maria Popp was an alternate for Romania in figure skating at the 1936 Olympics, but did not start. She was Romanian Junior Champion in 1932 and was twice National Champion, winning in 1938 and 1940. Popp studied piano at the Music Conservatory Astra, and later earned a law degree, and would work as a legal counsel. In August 1942 Popp was hiking with friends when she fell and shattered her leg, which had to be amputated. She managed with a wooden prosthesis for the remainder of her life.
