José Lorente

Catalan boxer José Lorente gained national attention in 1934 when, as a bantamweight, he became the first person from the city of Sabadell to win a Spanish national championship. He was selected to represent his country at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but, when the Spanish Civil War broke out, he became trapped in Catalonia and could not attend the Games. Fighting for the Republican side, he was captured by the Francoists and taken prisoner.

Upon his release, Lorente turned professional in 1939 as a flyweight and became national champion in that division one year later by defeating Luis Camín. He fought Luis Soria for the bantamweight title in 1941, but lost, and then lost his flyweight title to Fortunato Ortega in his next bout. He had his final fight in 1943 and retired with a record of 8-8-4. By career, he was a carpenter.
