Birmingham’s George Spears served in the Dorset Regiment in the second half of the 1930s, until leaving service in 1939. During his time with the Dorsets, he won the Army welterweight title four years in succession 1935-38. He was also an Inter-Services champion and appeared for the Army in many representative matches. In 1936, Spears lost to Walter Pack in the ABA welterweight final, and was a reserve for the Berlin Olympics. In between, he was also a reserve for Great Britain in the match against the United States at Wembley. Spears failed in another bid to win an ABA title in 1938, when the referee stopped the fight in the second round of his contest with Charlie Webster. Both before and after his days in the Army, Spears was a member of the Metropolitan Boxing Club in Saltley, Birmingham.
