At the age of 17, flyweight Austin Anthony was runner-up at the 1926 Welsh Championships. He won the first of three consecutive Welsh amateur welterweight titles in March 1928, and five months later was a member of the Great Britain squad at the Olympics. Anthony, who boxed out of the Cardiff Gavalva Club, was considered to be one of the best welterweights Wales had seen at the time.
