Oddone Piazza was the first Italian boxer to fight for a world title. Raised in Milano, in 1930 he went to Boston for a tournament and stayed in the USA, where he fought as a professional. After defeating Henry Firpo in November 1931, Piazza earned a title shot against Willie “Gorilla” Jones for the middleweight world title, but was soundly defeated, as Piazza did not get off his stool for the seventh round.
In 1932 he returned to Italy and lost two bouts for the European middleweight title. In 1938 he retired from boxing and returned to the United States, where he married an American woman.
