Biography
A former London Fire Brigade heavyweight champion, Harry Billings reached the ABA heavyweight final in 1924. He lost to Port of London Authority policeman Arthur Clifton after Billings retired in the first round, succumbing to a much stronger and heaver opponent. Despite his defeat, Billings joined Clifton in the 1924 British Olympic squad, although he was a non-starter, while Clifton went on to reach the quarter-final.
The boxing career of Harry Billings was of little significance after that, as he continued working for the fire service. It was working for them in August 1944 that he was tragically killed when hit by an oncoming train while on the track close to Hayes Station. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
