In the 1947/48 season, Roberto Lovati was a youth team goalkeeper with Pisa. Two years later he made his début in Serie B with Monza, before débuting in Serie A with Torino in 1954/55. The following season, Lovati moved to Lazio, made 134 Serie A appearances in six seasons, and was a member of their team that won the first post-war Italian Cup final, against Fiorentina, in 1958.
Internationally, Lovati went to Helsinki with the Italian team for the 1952 Olympics, but was an unused substitute. He won two full Italian caps, both within 18 days of each other in 1957, with his début being in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in Roma. After retiring, Lovati worked in various capacities with Lazio. He was the goalkeeping coach, youth team coach, talent scout, club official and, during a difficult period, took charge of the first team for 110 Serie A matches, during which time he won the Coppa delle Alpi (Cup of the Alps) in 1971.
