Although he had German parents, ice hockey goalie Olaf Kölzig was born in South Africa, before the family moved to Canada in 1973. He was a member of the German squad at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics that was eliminated at the group stage. Eight years later at Torino, the team again did not advance to the quarter-finals and finished a disappointing tenth. In total, Kölzig won 36 international caps and scored six goals.
At club level, Kölzig played with New Westminster Bruins (1987-88), Tri-City Americans (1988-90), Washington Capitals (1990-2008), Tampa Bay Lightning (2008-09), and Toronto Maple Leafs (2009). He also played for Eisbären Berlin in the German pro league (DEL) in 2004-05, and won the German Championship in 2005.
Kölzig founded the Carson Kölzig Foundation for Youth Autism as his son Carson fell ill with the disorder. He also co-founded the Athletes Against Autism Foundation. In 2001, Kolzig was awarded the NHL Foundation Player Award for his engagement. In 2006, he was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. Kölzig also co-owned the Tri-City Americans and became a goalie coach.
