Mihály Hesz had the following podium finishes at the Flatwater World Championships: 1st 1966 K1 10000 m, 1st 1971 K1 4×500 m (with Géza Csapó, István Szabó, and Csaba Giczy), 2nd 1966 K1 4×500 m (with Imre Kemecsey, András Szente, and the non-Olympian Ferenc Cseh), 3rd 1963 K1 10000 m, 3rd 1970 K1 4×500 m (with Géza Csapó, István Csizmadia, and the non-Olympian József Svidró), 3rd 1971 K1 500 m.
Hesz was divorced from the Hungarian swimmer Andrea Gyarmati in 1976 and emigrated as a dentist to West Germany in 1980. He then adopted the Germanised name Hess.
