Biography

After initially trying swimming, gymnastics, and basketball, András Rajna began kayaking when he was 11-years-old. When Rajna was 18-years-old he joined MTK in Budapest, becoming the World Youth Champion in the K1 500 metres. In 1982 he qualified for the World Championships, finishing sixth in the same event. The following year he won bronze in the K4 500 metres at the World Championships in Tampere to earn a place on the Hungarian Olympic team. The 1984 Games, however, were boycotted by the Eastern Bloc countries, with Rajna denied an opportunity to compete.

Rajna continued to pick up more medals at the World Championships, with silver in the K2 500 metres in both 1986 and 1994 with compatriot Attila Adrovicz. Between the two championships, Rajna competed in the K2 1,000 metres at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics, placing ninth and sixth, respectively. His best Olympic performance came at the 1996 Atlanta Games when the Hungarian team of Rajna, Adrovicz, Ferenc Csipes, and Gábor Horváth won silver in the K4 1,000 metres.

Rajna then retired from kayaking, serving as the marketing director of the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Association for two years. He then spent the next eight years as a brand manager for the French fashion house Chanel. Eventually Rajna returned to kayaking as the head of MTK, working with their sports development committee. He was also married to Katalin Povázsán, who competed in the K1 500 metres event at the 1980 Moskva Olympics.
