Viola Bauer was married to Greek cross-country skier Lefteris Fafalis and lived in Greece. She has studied social pedagogy and was a sports soldier with the German Bundeswehr. Her greatest success was the gold medal in the relay at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the silver medal in 2006 at Torino. She also won a bronze medal in the pursuit at Salt Lake City. Bauer earned another silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in the relay. Since the Tour de Ski 2007/08 and at the Olympics 2010 at Vancouver and 2014 at Sochi she worked as a television analyst for the channel Eurosport.
