Luciano Buonfiglio began paddling in 1967 with the Gruppo Milanese Canoa and made his début with the national youth team in 1969. He then moved to the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro (Police Force), coached by the Olympic medalist Francesco La Macchia. Buonfiglio was sixth in the 4x500m relay at the 1974 European Championships and eighth in the 10,000 metres at the 1974 Mexico World Championships. In his only participation at the Olympic Games (Montréal 1976) he competed in the K-4 1,000, but was eliminated in the first round repêchage. Buonfiglio won 36 international caps.
After his playing days, Buonfiglio obtained a law degree and worked as an official in banking and insurance groups. He later became President of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation and a member of the CONI National Council. He was a Commander of the Italian Republic and was given the Stella d’Oro (Gold Star) for sporting merit of the Italian Olympic Committee. Internationally he was treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of the ICF, the International Canoe Federation.
