German skeleton pilot Steffi Hanzlik won the very first skeleton race in the World Cup in Königssee in 1996 and became the first overall women’s World Cup winner the following year. Two years later she repeated her success. In 2000 she also became the sport’s first women’s world champion and was a pioneering German skeleton pilot. In total, she won nine World Cup races.
At the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Hanzlik finished tied seventh. The following year she collected the silver medal at the European Championships and became German national champion. She studied public administration economy and worked with the municipality of Gotha.
