Biography

In the late 1910s and early 1920s Dutch track and field athlete Gerardus van der Wel competed in middle-distance running events. Van der Wel won his first national title in 1918 with victory in the 1,500 metres before winning the 5,000 metres title the following year. He won another 1,500 metres title in 1921, along with back-to-back titles in the 5,000 metres in 1920 and 1921. He was selected to compete in the latter at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics but did not advance from the heats. During World War II Van der Wel was sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where he was killed in May 1945.
