Ralf Bartels was a German shot putter who placed seventh at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Due to a calf injury, he could not start at Beijing in 2008 and narrowly failed to qualify for the final round at London 2012. Bartels finished third at the World Championships in 2005 and 2009, became European Champion in 2006, and won a silver medal in 2010 and a bronze in 2002.
At the 2010 Indoor World Championships Bartels finished third but was later promoted to the silver medal position after the doping-related disqualification of Belorussian Andrei Mikhnievich. The following year Bartels won the gold medal at the European Indoors, where he had already collected a bronze medal in 2009. Bartels won the German national title seven times: 2002-06, 2008-09. He was awarded the Rudolf-Harbig-Gedächtnispreis (Memorial Award) in 2013.
