Tom Ashley became the third New Zealander to win an Olympic windsurfing title when he won the men’s gold at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Previous champions from New Zealand had been the brother and sister Bruce (1988) and Barbara Kendall (1992). Ashley was also the world champion in the RS:X windsurfer class in 2008. He attended Westlake Boys’ High School in Auckland, of which noted sailors Chris Dickson and Dean Barker were also alumni.
