Biography

Raúl Castañeda competed as a light-flyweight at the 2004 Athina Olympics. He continued to compete as an amateur and won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. Castañeda actually started competing as a professional in 2005, winning his first bout on 1 October. He fought professionally through 2012, finishing with a record of 15 wins (8 by KO) and 2 losses. In May 2009 Castañeda fought Mario Rodríguez for the WBC Continental Americas Minimumweight title, but lost by decision.

Castañeda had difficult times in later life, and was arrested several times for robbery. He was killed in 2017 in what appears to have been a drive-by shooting.
