Born in New Zealand of Tongan parentage, the appearance of Ma’afu Hawke in the Oceanian qualifying tournament sparked controversy as he had previously fought professionally in both Muay Thai kick-boxing and in mixed martial arts bouts under the name “Doug Viney”. He was convincingly outpointed by the USA’s Jason Estrada in his first round super-heavyweight bout in Athens. Hawke has since returned to the world of mixed martial arts and won the 2007 K-1 tournament in Las Vegas.
