Biography

Tom Compernolle was one of the Belgium’s foremost distance runners in the early 21st century, together with Mohammed Mourhit. He won Belgian titles in the 5000 m in 2001, 2002 and 2004, and the cross country championship in 2004. His best international performance was a tenth place at the 2006 European Championships. After a brief spell at a professional running team, he joined the army in 2007. At a training in Zedelgem, the truck carrying Compernolle got off the road and crashed, killing the 2004 Olympian.

Personal Best: 5000 – 13:14.75 (2004).
