Elsa “Elsi” Sidler of Basel was Switzerland’s first female canoeing Olympian, having won national titles in 1951 (women’s K1 500 m) and 1952 (K1 1,000 m). Selected to represent her country at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, she was eliminated in the heats of the women’s K1 500 metres event, and retired from competition shortly thereafter.
