Vera Carrara was the first Italian female track cyclist to win a world title. She did this at the 2005 World Championships at Los Angeles in the points race and repeated the feat the next year in Bordeaux. Mostly specializing in the points race, she won silver in 2004 and bronze in 2002, adding a World Junior title in 1998, and winning the European U-23 individual pursuit.
Carrara also raced on the road, winning silver in the time trial at the 2002 European U-23 Championships and placing third in the road race at the same event in 2001. She placed fourth in the points race at the 2004 Athina Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships in the points race.
