Hans Straub won his first national title in canoeing as a teenager, when he paired with Emil Bottlang to win the K2 1,000 metres race in 1948 in Thun. Selected for the Swiss Olympic team to compete at London 1948, he competed in the singles event in that same distance, finishing sixth in his heat. A longtime member of Kanuclub Zürich, Straub had a very successful career throughout the 1950s, winning multiple national titles including in K1 500 metres, 1,000 metres and 10,000 metres; K2 500, 1,000 and 10,000 metres; and 500, 1,000 metres relay. Straub was selected twice more to compete at the Olympic Games, in 1952 and 1960, but did not advance to the final of any of the events which he competed in. Outside of sport, he made his living as a fitter.
