Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was an Italian banker and politician. After a long managerial career with positions of international importance, he was governor of the Bank of Italy from 1979-93 when he assumed the office of Prime Minister (1993-94) during a period of institutional and economic transition.
Ciampi was a minister in the governments of Romano Prodi (1996-98) and Massimo D’Alema (1998-99), between 1999-2006, when he became the 10th President of Italy. His mandate was characterized by a commitment to defend national unity and identity, as well as the principles of democratic Italy, and he was credited with helping Italy adopt the Euro.
All the foreign honors received during his presidential term were donated by Ciampi to the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and are now exhibited in a room dedicated to him in the Library of the Scuola Normale. On the centenary of his birth, in December 2020, an Italian postage stamp was released in his honor.
