Austrian alpine skier Mario, brother of Andreas and Michael Matt, won the slalom gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. At Torino in 2006, he could not finish the slalom and placed 34th in the alpine combined. In 2001 and 2007 he became World Champion in slalom and in the second of those years won another title with the Austrian team. Additionally, he won the silver medal in 2001 in the alpine combined and the bronze in the slalom in 2013.
Mario Matt won 15 World Cup races in total. Domestically, he won the slalom national title in 2000, 2005-06, 2012, and the combination title in 1999. Matt later ran, among other things, a horse-breeding operation in his hometown of Flirsch, as well as an après-ski bar in St. Anton am Arlberg, which he has operated since 2009. He was married and raised a daughter.
