Yevgeny Pupkov played ice hockey for Kazakhstan at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. He also played at the B World Championships in 1999 and the main division of the Worlds in 2006. A defenseman, Pupkov started his senior career with Metallurg Novokuznetsk and played with them 1995-2005. Playing through 2010, his last few years were itinerant as he joined SKA Saint Petersburg, Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk, Amur Khabarovsk, Lada Togliatti, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, Khimik Voskresensk, and Ertis Pavlodar.
After retiring from the ice Pupkov became a coach. He was named as head coach of HC Almaty and coached them until his death from COVID-related complications in 2021.
