Phil Carmichael was a centre who played for the Wallabies on their 1908-09 tour of the British Isles and France, appearing in 34 of the 38 matches. During that tour he won a gold medal at the 1908 London Olympics. Carmichael earned four caps for Australia. He studied at St. Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace. He also played for Australia during a 1905 tour of New Zealand, and when New Zealand toured Australia in 1907. He later turned down several opportunities to play rugby league professionally, and continued to play club football. Before his death in 1973, at age 89, he was the last surviving member of the Wallaby gold medalists.
