Biography

Barbara Hammond achieved a rare distinction by competing at international level in all three currently recognised Olympic disciplines. Starting as a three day eventer under her maiden name of Barbara Pearson she was still a teenager when she finished twelfth at the 1964 European Championships. A regular at the top international events throughout the sixties and early seventies she competed, as an individual outside the British team, at the 1974 World Championships at Burleigh. One of her eventing horses, Marlay QC, proved so adept at show jumping that the pair campaigned at international level in that discipline as well. From the mid seventies onwards she concentrated on dressage and was a part of the British contingent at the 1978 World Dressage Championships. After missing the 1980 and 1984 Games she climaxed her quarter century long sporting career with an appearance at the Seoul Olympics of 1988.
