Penelope Moreton

Penelope Moreton was born in Kent, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. J. P. Moreton of Saddelle, Argyll, Scotland. She was a member of the Irish equestrian team that won a World Championship in three-day event at Burghley in 1966, and also represented Ireland at the European equestrian championships in Moskva in 1965 and in 1968 at Punchestown.

Considered the top dressage rider in the country by the late 1960s, she was a member of the Irish equestrian team at the 1968 Olympics and rode Loughlin in the three-day event; tragically her horse lost its life in an unfortunate fall on the cross-country course. The course being flooded by a recent rainfall, Moreton was also injured and nearly drowned in the accident. In 1969, she married Francis McAuley, a surgeon from Dublin.
