Shane Reed was a New Zealand aquathlete and triathlete. Reed was born in Palmerston North but moved to Australia when he was eight. He based himself on the Gold Coast in Queensland with the aim of making the Australian triathlon team. With no possibility of representing Australia, however, Reed switched his allegiance back to New Zealand.
Between 1998 and 2004 Reed won the ITU Aquathon World Championship three times. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics Reed competed in the triathlon, finishing in 34th place. His brother Matty Reed, who represented the United States, competed in the same race finishing two places ahead of him. On the ITU world circuit Reed took part in 112 races finishing with 20 podium places and nine wins. During the 2015 season Reed was ranked inside the top 15 triathletes in the world.
Reed excelled at the ITU Aquathon championships, where he won three world titles. Reed won the Asian Cup event in 2001 and competed in 35 races the following year. In 2004 Reed won a World Cup event and a European Cup event to go along with his world title. In 2017 Reed won the World Masters Games in his age group in the triathlon. Reed died from brain cancer in October 2022 after being diagnosed with a tumour in April.
