Weightlifter Vladimir Sedov was a four-time national champion in Kazakhstan. However Sedov’s career was overshadowed by doping with multiple results later being declared as invalid. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics he originally finished in fourth place in the light-heavyweight class but was disqualified by the IOC in 2016 after a positive retest for stanozolol. As a result Sedov’s results from 2008 to 2016 were annulled, including three medals at the World Championships (gold 2009, bronze 2013, silver 2014) and three medals at the Asian Championships (gold 2009 and 2016, silver 2011).
Sedov was found dead in June 2023 with the regional police department declaring it to be a suicide. He was 35-years-old. His wife Svetlana Podobedova also competed at the Olympics in weightlifting.
