Educated at Monmouth Grammar School for Boys, David Broome won two individual show jumping bronze medals at the Olympics in 1960 and 1968. However, he fared better at the World Championships, winning the individual title in 1970 and helping Britain win the team championship in 1978. Three times he won the European show jumping individual championship (1961, 67, 69). Broome also won the King George V Gold Cup a record six times, the last in 1991, and those wins spanned 31 years (1960-91). In 1970, David Broome was awarded a CBE. Although he rode numerous horses, his greatest successes came aboard Mister Softee, who he rode from 1965-69. He later became an administrator of equestrian sport.
