Biography

The 1960 Olympics were special for Steve Tikal, as it was the first time in 12 years that he met his brother František. In 1948, Zdeněk had fled to Australia with their father after the Communists rose to power in Czechoslovakia. Zdeněk, now calling himself “Steve”, was on the Australian team that was trounced by František’s team, 18-1. The 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics were Steve’s only major international, and it did not last long as he either broke his collarbone or separated his shoulder (reports unclear) in the only game he played. A forward, he played for Melbourne Demons IHC from 1950-53, then was with Melbourne Pirates IHC in 1956-57, and played with Melbourne Hakoah IHC from 1959-63.
