Biography

A native of Sjenica, Amar Garibović began participating in FIS-sanctioned events in 2004, but did not win his first race until March of 2009, when he captured the 10km event in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite an 109th place finish at the 2009 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, he was selected to represent Serbia at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he placed 80th in the 15km. cross-country skiing event. He continued to compete at the national and international level with varying success and was training to participate at future World Championships and the 2014 Winter Olympics when he was killed in a car accident in Croatia that left his brother, also a competitive skier, in serious condition. He had recently enrolled in a university Physical Education program and has the unfortunate distinction of being the first starting competitor from the 2010 Winter Olympics to die.
