Biography

Jens Falkenberg followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a career as a military officer. After graduating from Kristiania Cathedral School, he joined the army in 1893 and was commissioned as an officer three years later. He graduated from the military college in 1899, completed the military riding school in Norway in 1903, and attended the French cavalry academy in 1907. Later, he attended the Central Gymnastics School (1909), the shooting school of the French Rhine Army and a colonel’s course of the French artillery (1929). Successively, he was promoted to captain (1901), major (1927) and lieutenant colonel (1929). In 1930, Falkenberg was appointed chief of the Mountain Artillery Regiment No. 1.

Falkenberg’s duties included teacher at the military school and from 1916-27 chief of the field artillery non-commissioned officer’s school. In addition, he was a member of the military commissariat and served as military attaché in Paris from 1927-30.

At the 1912 Olympic Games, Falkenberg competed with limited success in the individual events of dressage and jumping. With the same horse, Hjørdis, he returned to the Olympics in 1920, placing eighth in the individual dressage. In 1900, Falkenberg married Kerstin Ulrica Petronella Augusta Gøransson, and the couple had two sons.
