Biography

From 1992 until his death in 2021 Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya was the king of the Bamum people, an ethnic group located in Cameroon. Njoya trained at the Institute of Administrative Studies in Dakar in the role of a civil administrator while he was a young prince. From there he entered politics, becoming a member of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, the country’s ruling party. He held several important positions in the party including the Director of the Cabinet of the Minister of Armed Forces, Vice Minister of National Education and Culture, and Cameroon’s ambassador to Equatorial Guinea and Egypt. Njoya had a keen interest in sport and served as both the Minister of Youths and Sports and as the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). He was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1984.
