Leonardo Sabino Hernández Martínez spent his life involved in sports administration across Ecuador and South America. Martínez first held a senior leadership role at the Guayas Sports Federation from 1969 to 1972, before taking charge of the National Sports Federation of Ecuador from 1972 to 1976. In 1976 he was appointed as the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ecuador, serving in the role until 1996. He also served as the President of the Bolivarian Sports Organization and the general secretary of the Pan American Sports Organization. Martínez was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1988.
