Throughout his career René Burkhalter was involved in sports administration in Switzerland, which saw him serve in several high profile roles. Burkhalter founded the Fencing Grand Prix of Bern in 1965 and served as the organisation’s President for 25 years. He was also a member of the committee and technical commission of the Swiss Fencing Federation. From 1996 to 2000 he served as the President of the Swiss Olympic Association before becoming President of the Swiss Sports Aid Foundation in 2001. For his work Burkhalter was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 2000.
