Italian sports director Gianni Petrucci spent his entire career involved with sports organisation, culminating in 1999 when he was elected president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). He had been the general secretary of CONI from 1968-76 before a brief period with the Football League (1977), before taking on the general-secretary role of the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) until 1986, when he took up the same position with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), between then and 1991. He was elected president of the FIP in 1992. Petrucci joined the executive council of CONI in 1997, and two years later, on 29 January 1999, he became president following the resignation of Mario Pescante. He remained in this position until 14 January 2013 when, two days later, he was elected president of FIP for the second time. Petrucci was also mayor of the city of San Felice Circeo from 2012-17.
