Before becoming a sports administrator José María Echevarría was a hockey player who won the Spanish championship with Club de Campo. Echevarría later served with the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games in multiple roles including as a member of the executive committee and being the Honorary President of the technical commission. From 2002 to 2005 he served as the President of the Olympic Committee of Spain following the early death of Alfredo, Conde Goyeneche in a car accident.
