Born in England in 1931, John Hoskins later moved to Bermuda in the late 1960s, working as an accountant for Eagle Airways. In his new home Hoskins played field hockey for Bermuda, eventually becoming the secretary general of the Bermuda Olympic Association. By 2000 he had become the President of the organisation, serving two consecutive four-year terms in the role. As part of his many positions in sports administration for Bermuda he travelled to the 1991 Pan American Games where he met Fidel Castro. In 1992 Bermuda competed at the Winter Olympics for the first time in their history, with luger Simon Payne being the sole representative at the Albertville Games. Hoskins had the honour of being the nation’s flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony, repeating the role at the 1994 Lillehammer Games and the 1998 Nagano Games.
