Sir Eion Edgar became acting President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee in 2001 and, in 2003, was named to the permanent position. He remained President through 2009 when he was named Honorary President. Edgar also served a term as President of the New Zealand Football Association and was later an Honorary Patron of the New Zealand Football Foundation.
Edgar’s career was in investment banking, in which he became chairman of the investment company Forsyth Barr until he retired in 2019. In 2009, he was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to education, business, and sport.
