Younès Chetali started his sporting career as a runner, along with a parallel career in the military. He joined the Étoile Sportive du Sahel football club, and was part of the team that won the league title in 1949/50 season. Later, he went on to also become a football manager.
Chetali was the President of the Tunisian Football Federation from 1996 to 1997, before going on to be the President of the Tunisian Athletics Federation from 1999 to 2009. He was also the President of the National Olympic Committee of Tunisia from 2011 to 2013. In 2019, Chetali was awarded with the Order of the Republic. His brother, Abdelmajid Chetali, was also a player and coach for the national side, and represented Tunisia in the football tournament at the 1960 Roma Olympics.
