From a young age Augusto Lopes Teixeira was a key figure in Angolan independence from Portugal, holding various roles in the MPLA. Teixeira initially trained as an engineer before becoming involved in politics, eventually serving as Angola’s Secretary of State for Industry and Energy in 1975. Two years later he was elected as a Member of the Central Committee at the first MPLA congress. Following independence Teixeira also served as the first President of the National Olympic Committee of Angola from 1979 to 1980, before serving as the Minister of Education in the country from 1981 to 1991.
