On 24 October 1990 the National Olympic Committee of Armenia was founded with Ruben Hakopyan appointed as its first President. The IOC provisionally recognised the NOC before it gave full recognition on 24 September 1993 at the IOC session in Monte Carlo. That same year Hakopyan was succeeded as President by Ruben Torosyan, with Armenia competing at the Olympics for the first time at the 1994 Games in Lillehammer.
