Biography

Narinder Batra studied at Amar Singh College and then received a law degree from the University of Kashmir in 1981. He later received honorary doctorates in philosophy from Teerthanker Mahaveer University in 2012, and from the Manav Rachna Educational Institutions in 2019. He was a member of the CSR Committee of Ministry of Corporate Affairs for the Government of India.

Batra stood as President of Hockey Jammu & Kashmir from 1997-2010 and then from 2012-14. From 2014-16 he was President of Hockey India, and he was then President of the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) in 2016-22, and from 2017-22 he was President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

In his role as an NOC President Batra was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2019 and remained an IOC Member through 2022. His many other roles in sports administration have including serving as President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, and as vice-president of the Asian Hockey Federation from 2003-13. Batra also served in the Delhi & District Cricket Association from 2003-13.

In 2022 Batra was deemed in contempt by the Delhi High Court and his position of life membership in Hockey India was removed, leading him to step down as President of the IOA, the FIH, and the IOC. Shortly after those resignations the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against him for allegedly misusing Hockey India funds.
