.Jules Rimet grew up living with his grandfather. He discovered football at age 11. A conscientious student, he became a lawyer, and in 1898 founded a Christian, republican, and democratic newspaper, “La Revue”. In addition to football, which interested him from an educational point of view, but which he never played except recreationally, Rimet also studied poetry, literature, and music.
Rimet was credited with the idea behind the football World Cup even if it was first broached by Robert Guerin, a journalist at “Le Matin”. However, Rimet’s role is indisputable, serving as president of the French Football Federation from 1919-49 and FIFA from 1921-54.
From 1930 until 1970, the World Cup trophy, made of gold-plated metal and depicting the goddess of victory, bore the name the Jules Rimet Trophy in his honor. In 1974 the World Cup trophy was renamed the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
