Biography

Prior to his National Service with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Arthur Richard Cole-Hamilton graduated from Cambridge University with a BA degree. In 1962 Cole-Hamilton began his career as a chartered accountant before joining Clydesdale Bank in 1967, serving as the bank’s chief executive from 1982 to 1992. The following year he was awarded with a CBE for services to banking. He also held the posts of President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Scotland and the President of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In 1979 Cole-Hamilton joined the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, serving on the finance committee, the championship committee, and the general committee, chairing the latter from 1994 to 1996. He was also a member of Prestwick Golf Club, which included a spell captaining the club in 1987. From 1994 to 1998 Cole-Hamilton was the President of the International Golf Federation.
